The Rorstrand factory was founded in 1726 as the second Porcelain factory in Europe. The first Christmas Plates series was started in 1904. The well known Blue Square Christmas plate series did not start until 1968 and ended in 1999. The "Ten Commandments" series (of 10 plates) replaced the Christmas plate. |

Anton Michelsen On this page you will find links to all of our Anton Michelsen items. |
|
Anton Michelsen opened his first workshop in Denmark in 1841 which very quickly became the leading firm of gold and silversmiths. He was a significant influence on Danish jewelry design during the 19th and early 20th century. He became Crown Jeweler and Insignia Maker to the King in 1848. Producing insignia involved the fine art of enameling, a specialty the A. Michelsen refined over the years. The idea of making an annual Christmas set designed by a new artist each year started in 1910. Every year since 1910 A. Michelsen has commissioned a noted Danish artist to create a new Christmas set in glowing enamel and 24 carat gold plate on sterling silver. Anton's son Carl started the production of the spoons and forks using enamel. Carl's son Poul, designed two of the earliest sets. Poul's son Jorgen, created the 1956 set. These spoons reflect a long and cherished tradition involving the finest artists of their time. The 1913 set by Poul Michelsen was the first to use enamel. Due to the supply shortages during World War II, very little enamel was used during those years. |
